Looking After Your Nails During Pregnancy
Our award-winning Nail Technician and Education Director at Surmanti Nikki Paterson shares her words of wisdom for new mummy’s who want some advice on looking after their nails during pregnancy.
The aches and pains that come into play during your pregnancy journey are inevitable.
Growing a tiny human comes with a wide array of changes to your body. One of the changes can be the quality and texture of your nails. When I was pregnant I found my nails were stronger than ever! I have found this with the majority of my clients also.
Below are my top tips on how to stay safe and care for your nails during pregnancy.
1) When visiting a nail salon, choose wisely
Choosing a nail salon with a good ventilation system – To avoid inhaling any potential chemicals from the salon, I would always suggest a salon with a good ventilation system. You could also ask if you are able to be positioned close to a window or door so that there is plenty of air circulation. Not all products are made equal, choose a salon that does not use products containing MMA - do not be afraid to ask.
Choosing a nail salon with high hygiene standards – Choosing a salon with a high standard of hygiene means that you are less likely to be exposed to bacteria that cause infections.
2) Choose treatments that are gentle on your skin
Surmanti has a beautiful ‘naturally’ range to complement their professional nail system, from exfoliants, hand creams, massage oils, treatment mousses to candles, home fragrance and more. Visit our website www.surmanti.co.nz for to shop our range.
3) File the right way
Many people do not realise that filing the nail in a back-and-forth motion will add stress to the nail, potentially causing splitting. Choose a natural nail file (not all files are equal, a file that is too coarse will cause damage) File in one direction only.
4) Strengthen your nails
Having regular manicures with professional products will help you grow longer stronger nails. Ensure you do not pick off nail polish or additives as this will cause damage to your nails, making them thinner and more susceptible to breakages. Adding vitamins will help add strength to natural nails. A lack of vitamin B, calcium, iron and others will cause brittle nails. Surmanti has a professional nail system that is infused with biotin and silicia to add strength to your nails as they grow.
5) Self-care after baby
When your new bundle has arrived, your nails are going to appear softer and more prone to breakages, especially when you are completing tasks such as changing nappies often and washing your hands regularly. Wearing rubber gloves will help with the water exposure. The heat from the water can however still make your nails softer and more bendy while they are warm. Be mindful of your nails for 10 minutes after this task.
Nutrition is vital to ensure your nails are strong and healthy after baby. Eating whole foods such as plenty of fruit, vegetables, whole grains, and protein (egg, chicken, fish and nuts) will help nourish your insides and assist with strengthening your nails.
